A self-made American success story, Wolstein struggled in the early years of his business career, searching to determine if he was destined to be an attorney, merchant or something else. He ultimately settled upon real estate, first building houses in a Cleveland suburb and later developing shopping centers across the country. Today, the company that Wolstein started, Developers Diversified Realty, is the fourth-largest owner of retail space in the nation.

He also served as founder and president of The Wolstein Group and Heritage Development Company, developing Barrington Golf Club and The Bertram Hotel and Conference Center in Aurora, Glenmoor Country Club in Canton, The Renaissance Office Building in downtown Cleveland, and many other spectacular real estate projects. For nine years, he was the owner and president of The Cleveland Force MISL soccer team.

He married his high school sweetheart, Iris Shur, and they enjoyed more than 55 years and two children together. Wolstein developed more than 1,000 new homes and 300 commercial properties representing more than 50 million square feet of retail space.

Crossing another road on May 17, 2004, Wolstein lost his battle against cancer at age 77.
